By Margarita Joseph

While purchasing paper napkins with decorative designs and colors for a holiday gathering brings a decorate touch, they may not always fit the overall mood, especially those requiring a more intimate atmosphere. Hand-made holiday napkins will offer hosts the opportunity to personalize their meal and create not only unique place-settings, but create special gifts for each guest.

It only takes minutes to personalize the next holiday party, and this guide will teach you how. If done correctly you can complete this craft project in a matter of minutes and you'll have something you can use over and over at festive parties. Colors can change depending on the holiday, as can any sayings and symbols. Be imaginative, and create an unforgettable craft that can be used again and again.

A little forethought will help determine how to decorate the napkins. Later in the project strips will be applied to fabric, and sewn in place, but remember there are many ways these could be festively decorated beforehand. Some ideas are handwritten sayings, holiday slogans, some that might be personalized depending on how well you know your guests. Also beads, shells, glitter, and fabric gel.

Some creations to consider would be of course the normal Merry Christmas, but could also include other things, such as a child is born or other religious sayings. They can also be personalized. For example, Linda, the greatest smile in the world. They can also be humorous and can fit in with almost any occasion.

Makers could also make iron on pictures of those to attend and iron small pictures on the fabric with their names printed to further personalize the meal. Other ideas include funny pictures or symbolic icons, such as fourth of July flags, turkeys for thanksgiving, or trees and angels for Christmas.

Make sure all the items needed are gathered when you begin. Place fabric, iron, ruler and scissors nearby. While fabric is still in one piece, iron it. Cut in 17 inch squares or to desired size. Make sure to cut one inch larger than the desired size or napkins may not turn out as wanted.

Take one side of the fabric between fingers and fold it over to 1/4 inch. Place it on ironing board and iron it in place. After ironing the crease, begin turning the fabric clockwise, and ironing. Do this until each side of the fabric has been folded and creased. Double each side and iron. Do this with each cut fabric square.

Now sew the napkin together. Take your decorative strips of fabric and sew it to the square. If you have made other things to applied to the square to the strip sew it on now also.

Make sure to sew fabric piece carefully and firmly to the square. Iron fabric pieces is applicable. If desired, a piece of Velcro could be applied to fabric strips to change the strips for an all occasion holiday napkins.
