Should a Debt Collections Company Spend Time Attaining for Libraries?

By Rob Sutter

A debt collections company is in charge of a multitude of aspects and they are all legitimate cases to take care of. For example, I think everyone who's been in school recently will agree that student loans have skyrocketed and a multitude of defaults exist. Child support is another area in which payments seen may come in sketchy amounts. These are the common problems that I have seen but when it comes to libraries, I'd like to believe that they're not as prominent in comparison.

According to an article posted on the Kingsport Timesnews, the Kingsport Public Library recently had to enlist the services of a debt collections company in order to take care of late fees that have built up recently. These are the kinds of items which typically see late fees of a day or two and there's no shame in those seen. However, the amounts have to be paid off and the fact that so many people let it grow out of proportion is astounding. It's no wonder why agencies such as Rapid Recovery are enlisted.

According to the article, around 745 items are overdue and these amount to more than $14,000 of debt. Considering that this accounts for around 10 percent of the annual materials budget, you can see just how much the losses pile on. It was even detailed that one debtor had $348 to debt to their name, which makes me wonder why so many people have fallen into such tremendous amounts to pay off. Part of me is uncertain whether or not these amounts will be paid off by themselves.

I still think that these people should be able to pay off these amounts before they become terribly out of control. There are many factors which may lead into financial issues, including but not limited to losing a job. Even so, it doesn't pay a dime to return books on their due dates. I know people who can't live without making the return dates or earlier, so to imagine them being a single day late makes me cringe; this is how much stress giving back what was borrowed can place on people.

While I understand that issues may arise in many a personal life, I still don't believe that it changes the fact that these amounts have to be paid off. Even better, though, is the thought of avoiding such occurrences so that there isn't any debt to be had at all. Part of me believes that if the general public knew just how much their unpaid amounts contribute to the level of debt on a global basis, the awareness would resonate with people. Hopefully these amounts are collected by many a debt collections company in due time.
